The state of California has now surpassed 50k deaths and 3.5 million cases of the novel coronavirus as of Wednesday, giving it the number one slot among states.

This puts it ahead of New York state with 48k reported deaths (a total which may soon rise sharply due to the nursing home scandal), and Texas with slightly over 42k.
